Finding the Perfect Backdrop for Your Traverse City Family Photos

If you’ve ever tried wrangling toddlers, convincing a teenager to smile, or getting everyone dressed in matching outfits, you know family photos can feel like a workout before you even arrive at the location. As a Traverse City family photographer, my goal is always authenticity over perfection. I care far more about capturing real connection—the giggles, the tickle fights, and the quiet in-between moments—than getting everyone to stare stiffly at the camera. But choosing the right backdrop goes a long way toward keeping the mood relaxed and fun for everyone.Whether you're local to Northern Michigan or visiting the Grand Traverse bay for a summer vacation, here are five of my favorite family photo locations in Traverse City that offer room to play, beautiful natural light, and classic Up North magic.

1. Historic Barns Park & The Village at Grand Traverse Commons

  • Best for: Variety, florals, architecture lovers.
  • If you want a mix of historic charm, grassy rolling fields, and seasonal florals, Historic Barns Park at the Commons is hard to beat. The unique stone-wall garden and visitor center offer a unique architectural element you don’t find at the beach, while the open trails behind the botanic garden give kids plenty of space to run freely.
  • Local Tip: It’s ideal for year-round sessions. The stone walls provide rich texture in the spring, lush greens fill the gardens in summer, and the surrounding trees explode with vibrant colors every autumn.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Area (Glen Haven & Sunset Beaches)

  • Best for: Breathtaking views, golden hour, and adventurous families

  • There is nothing quite like the majestic scale of Sleeping Bear Dunes. Whether we head to Glen Haven Historic Village or stick to Esch Beach, the vast blue waters of Lake Michigan and sweeping dune grasses create an epic, timeless backdrop.

  • Local Tip: Glen Haven (in Glen Arbor) is my favorite part of the area - it has the best of everything: historic buildings, lots of dune grass, and beautiful stretches of beach.

Jack's Landing

  • Best for: If you want the rugged beauty of northern michigan with an untamed river and mature foliage for shade.
  • The suns sets perfectly on the other side of the Boardman River creating gentle light to play in the river and explore the paths. In the fall Jack's Landing welcomes adventurous families with pops of Traverse City fall colors.
  • Local tip: Plan some time to get your toes wet and let the kids skip rocks.

Timbers Recreation Area & DeYoung Natural Area

  • Best for: room for the kids to run and an elevated-rustic look for sentimental feeling family photos.
  • I had to group both of these Traverse City locations into one because they both offer historic barns and a familiar-feeling landscape and they're both equally as wonderful.
  • Local tip: both Timbers Recreation and DeYoung Natural Area barns are off the beaten path. Be prepared to do some walking to get to the destination.

In-Home Storytelling Sessions (Your Own Backyard!)

  • Best for: Traverse City vacationers who love their airbnb, homes with sentimental value, and newborns

  • Sometimes the best location isn't a public park—it’s the place where your family feels most like yourselves. In-home storytelling sessions take the pressure off completely. We can play in the yard, eat popsicles on the front porch, and read stories in the living room. Family property can be especially meaningful for an extended family session.

  • Local Tip: You don't need a picture-perfect showroom home. Natural light near a large window and a cozy couch are all we need to document this sweet season of your life as it truly is.
